How you look should not define whether you are good at your job. Unfortunately, it does!
First impressions count, it is that split decision your brain decides if something looks different and how you act upon that feeling. It is so harsh to say this, but if we think about it – it’s true!
Ever seen a homeless person sitting on the side of the street? What if that person was not actually homeless, what if they just dressed to look like that? Your brain automatically labels them homeless because of the way they look.
A young lad covered in tattoos and piercings, baggy jeans, smoking and walking with attitude, do you cross the road or cast your eyes down when passing so as not to get their attention? Worried that this ‘thug’ may steal from you? What if you saw that same young man was dressed in a white coat, with a stethoscope at the local hospital you visited – would you trust him now?
We all need to stop judging someone based on physical appearances and more about their actions, their abilities and their kindness.
I have been running businesses for over 25 years, I am a mum, foster mum, love dogs and I am a qualified accountant…but I am also covered in tattoos, ride a motorbike and I have bright pink hair (although that does vary month to month!). Do my tattoos and mode of transport mean I am not a good accountant? No.
So how do we overcome this prejudice and be ourselves?
First impressions count – visually this may not be to someone’s liking, but how you act will be the longer lasting memory.
One of my clients said to me once, “if you were a grey suited boring accountant, I would not have been able to work with you” – so by being myself, being good at my job, being open and honest – was something my clients wanted more than worrying about my tattoos – they cared about how good I was at my job and how I acted.
Don’t judge that book by its cover, treat everyone with respect and kindness, no matter what they look like.
We won’t change society overnight – but if you stop judging others based on appearance, it may encourage others to do the same.
